Leslie Model 303 / 323
Designed for use with a Hammond XB-2 Keyboard, XM-1
MIDI Drawbar Sound Module, XB-5 Pro-Portable Organ, XB-3, XC-3 organs or any other
Portable Keyboard, Synthesizer or other 1/4″ Device.
The Leslie 303 replaced the Leslie 302 as the newest Pro-Line Leslie model,
specifically replacing the original short cabinet, high-power member of the Leslie
Pro-Line, the Model 860. The 302 and 303 were specifically designed for the new Hammond
XB-Series Keyboards and Organs, XM-1 Module and almost any other keyboard, MIDI Module, or
1/4″ sound source. The new 303 is a 2-channel Leslie (rotary and stationary) for
handling instrumental sounds from a HAMMOND GM-1000 Sound Module or similar device through
the built-in stationary channel in addition to the classic HAMMOND drawbar sound through
the rotary channel.
A Lot of Power in a Little Cabinet!
The Pro-Line Model 303 is only 27″ tall and a popular choice among musicians
requiring both portability and true Leslie performance. It is manufactured in a textured
black painted cabinet, with factory applied corner guards, wheels and handles, especially
for the traveling professional musician. The XB-2 Keyboard, XM-1 Drawbar Sound Module XB-5
Portable Organ, and other Hammond XB-Series products will directly plug-in to the 303
through the use of a Leslie 11-Pin cable.
The 303 is essentially similar to the 302, except that it features an added
stationary-channel and speakers to accommodate the Hammond GM-1000 sound module, digital
piano or synth, in addition to the rotary channel for a Hammond XB-2 keyboard or other
drawbar organ input.
Direct Input from any 1/4″ Device – Keyboard,
Synth, Module, etc.
Most line-level input devices can directly plug-in to the new 303 through the on-board
1/4″ input jack. An additional 1/4″ jack is provided for direct plug-in of a
footswitch for Leslie motor speed switching from Chorale (Slow) to Tremolo (Fast).
Separate Bass and Treble controls allow the user to tailor the Leslie output from a mellow
sound to a bright sound as necessary. A Master overall volume control is provided to
control stage volume. A pedal preamp or other in-line preamp should be used for
instrument-level devices, such as a guitar, harmonica, etc.
The 303 features a 100 Watt RMS Solid-State
Amplifier, authentic Leslie 122-style Upper Horn Driver and with attached Rotating Horn,
12″ Woofer and a Bass Rotor Simulator
The Leslie Pro-Line Model 303 have a true 16 ohm upper horn and driver assembly,
identical to those installed in the classic tube models Leslie’s.
The Bass is handled with a
12″ Woofer and Bass Rotor Simulator which simulates exactly the speed changes of the
traditional Leslie lower Bass Rotor. The 303 has an additional stationary channel and
speakers to handle a instrumental or other audio input.
GOFF Professional offers many custom Touring and Gospel Music Packages
featuring the Leslie 303 and Hammond XB-Series equipment, such as the XB-2 and XB-5 or the
excellent XM-1 Drawbar Sound Module and XMc-1 Drawbar Controller. We recommend that the
XB-3 and XC-3 organs utilize the full-size Leslie Models 122XB or 771, although the 303
can be also used in tight space situations, or as a stage monitor in live situations when
a GM-1000 MIDI Sound Module is installed in the organ. The 303 is best suited for
situations requiring a small but loud Leslie where portability is critical.
Other Instruments can use the 303…
Almost any keyboard, organ, synth, MIDI Module, or similar device with a 1/4″
output could be connected to a 303 through the built-in 1/4″ input jack. The 303 is
the Pro-Line road version Leslie best suited for two-channel organs where space is
limited. In addition, touring professionals can use the 303 with guitars and harmonicas or
other instruments. A pedal preamp may be required for special applications which are not
line level, such as guitars, etc. so call us for information. For touring situations, we
strongly recommend that the 303 be housed in a road case.
Tips for the Best Hammond Sound from a
Keyboard or MIDI Module
Most keyboards and Modules tend to be too “bright” in their digital samples,
and as such should be equalized down when possible. As a reference, the Hammond B-3 had a
top Tonewheel Generator frequency of only slightly less than 6000 Hz, making it a mellow
instrument! For the best Hammond sound from keyboards, remember to mellow them down, turn
off any digital chorus or vibrato, and use a Leslie or a real rotary horn unit! The 303
can be mellowed down for a very good Blues / Jazz sound if the treble control is turned
down almost fully. For a rock “scream”, keep the Bass and Treble controls on a
brighter setting. There is no sound comparable to a real Leslie!
General Technical Information
The new Leslie Pro-Line Series Model 303 is essentially similar to many other Leslie
models, except it is the smallest of the new Leslie models and features a Bass Rotor
Simulator. The speed of the horn can be adjusted to suit the users taste. The 303 is
available in 120 VAC, 60 Hz, and 220 VAC, 50 Hz versions.
